Climate change and environmental problems do not stop at national borders and can only be tackled through joint action by states. Climate and environment policy have therefore become core issues for the European Union over the years. European environmental law helps to address transnational problems efficiently while creating comparable requirements for companies in the European single market.

The work of the Environment Unit covers a wide spectrum of European environment and climate policy and its legal framework – this includes climate action and climate impact resilience, the regulation of chemicals, the protection of biodiversity and of nature on land and in the oceans, the protection of air, water and soil quality and their functions, and the implementation of a comprehensive circular economy.

The Environment Unit is headed by Almut Nagel.
